ID-NET TEAM RECOVERS AUTO, DRUGS, GUN AND FUGITIVE

(8/8/2006) NEW HAVEN – Officers assigned to the department’s Information Driven Neighborhood Enforcement Team (ID-NET) made several arrests over the past few days, including the arrest of a fugitive from justice from Broward County, Florida.

During a motor vehicle stop in the area of Sherman Avenue near George Street on Sunday, 6 August, police arrested David Carlton Smith, 24, of 32 Walnut Street. Smith is considered a fugitive from justice on a charge of grand larceny in the third degree. He was also arrested on motor vehicle charges, including theft of a marker plate.

A 16-year-old male from Maryland and Roxanne Doss, 33, of Hamden, were arrested in the area of Ella Grasso Boulevard and Kimberly Avenue after officers observed what they believed to be a drug transaction. The juvenile was charged with possession of narcotics, possession of narcotics within 1500 feet of a school, possession of narcotics with intent to sell, possession of narcotics with intent to sell within 1500 feet of a school, possession of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance within 1500 feet of a school, possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell and possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell within 1500 feet of a school. Doss was charged with criminal attempt to possess narcotics and interfering with an officer. Police seized 17 bags of marijuana and two bags of cocaine.

On Monday, 7 August, officers recovered a stolen vehicle while they were on patrol in the area of Howard Avenue and Spring Street. They observed the operator of a 1995 Honda Civic driving in an erratic manner and attempted to pull over the vehicle. The operator, later identified as a 16-year-old male from New Haven, initially pulled over but then accelerated and turned onto Dewitt Street and then onto Spring Street. The driver and passenger jumped out of the vehicle, which was still running, and officers pursued them on foot. The operator of the vehicle was apprehended in the area of Rosette and Lamberton streets and was charged with larceny in the third degree, interfering with an officer, reckless endangerment in the first degree, criminal trespass in the third degree, reckless driving, failure to bring vehicle to a stop when signaled/engaging in pursuit, failure to grant right of way and operating without a license.

Police recovered a Smith & Wesson 9 mm. handgun and arrested four men following an altercation that occurred in the area of 320 Howard Avenue. Miguel Torres, 21, of 85 Kimberly Avenue, was arrested and charged with assault in the third degree and breach of peace in the second degree. A 16-year-old male from New Haven was charged with burglary in the second degree and interfering with police. A 17-year-old male from New Haven was charged with burglary in the second degree, possession of a dangerous weapon, criminal possession of a firearm, conspiracy to commit criminal possession of a firearm, reckless endangerment in the first degree and interfering with police. Rohan Mohamed, 24, of 81 First Avenue, was charged with criminal possession of a firearm, conspiracy to commit criminal possession of a firearm, reckless endangerment in the first degree, interfering with police, burglary in the second degree, criminal mischief in the third degree, criminal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, threatening, breach of peace in the second degree, theft of a marker place, operating an unregistered motor vehicle and operating a motor vehicle without insurance.
